Jewish Kent - Margate Hebrew Congregation

Margate Synagogue in Cliftonville holds services every Shabbat and on the principal Yomim Tovim. Being a seaside town, Margate attracts a large number of visitors, including Chasidim who use the synagogue for their own services during the month of Av.

Although like many small communities the Margate community is not what it was 40 years ago, when there were many youngsters and a thriving Cheder as well as 7 Jewish hotels and numerous guesthouses in the popular seaside town, the synagogue still holds regular services and social activities and now has 38 members.

Although Margate Hebrew Congregation is totally independent, it has always been the practice of the synagogue to accepts as members only those who are prepared to acknowledge the authority of the Chief Rabbi of the United Synagogue.

Following the death of long time minister Rev. Landau, the community like so many others does not have its own minister but its services are conducted by lay members.

Within 200 yards of the synagogue is Montefiore Court, a purpose-built development of self-contained one bedroom bungalows and flats for rent, with a resident manager, operated by the Jewish Community Housing Association primarily for Jewish people aged over 55 years. Applicants should apply to Debbi Jackson on 020 8381 4901.
